Dato Seri Ivan Teh honoured with the Rotary Club’s Paul Harris Fellow Award
Rotary’s highest honour, presented in Kuala Lumpur, recognising philanthropic contribution to causes including polio immunisation and clean water access.
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Fusionex founder and Group CEO Dato’ Seri Ivan Teh has received the Paul Harris Fellow Award, the Rotary Club’s highest honour, presented at the Rotary Club of Kuala Lumpur DiRaja’s 92nd Anniversary Installation Gala Dinner at the Shangri-La Hotel Kuala Lumpur. The award was presented by outgoing President Datuk Nelson Kwok Teng Toong.
What the fellowship recognises
Established in 1957, the Paul Harris Fellowship acknowledges individuals who have made significant contributions to, or supported, philanthropic efforts. The causes named in the citation are concrete rather than abstract: immunising children against polio, and providing clean water to communities that lack reliable access to it.
That specificity is worth pausing on. The fellowship is not a general goodwill award. It attaches to a defined body of work with measurable outcomes attached, which is unusual among corporate philanthropy recognitions.
Also honoured that evening was the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Al-Haj Ibni Almarhum Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Al-Haj, who received the fellowship’s highest honours.
The company he keeps
Past recipients of the Paul Harris Fellowship include US President Jimmy Carter, Russian President Boris Yeltsin, US astronaut James Lovell, UN Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar, and Jonas Salk, who developed the polio vaccine. The Salk inclusion is more than trivia given that polio eradication remains one of the causes the fellowship funds.
“A small but hopefully meaningful role”
I am humbled and honoured to receive this tremendous recognition alongside other noble philanthropists who have contributed greatly to these exemplary causes. I have immense respect for the Rotary Foundation as they have laboured tirelessly to eradicate diseases, supply clean water, and support educational programs worldwide, amongst many other initiatives. I’m glad to play a small but hopefully meaningful role in doing our part as global citizens and will continue to do so in any way I can.
The phrasing is characteristic. The emphasis lands on the Foundation’s work rather than the recipient’s, and the commitment is stated as ongoing rather than concluded.
How it sits with the rest of the record
Ivan Teh’s public work divides fairly cleanly into two tracks. One is commercial and technical, documented in the Technopreneur of Excellence coverage and the analyst citations that accompany it. The other is community-facing, running through education, digital inclusion and philanthropy.
The two are not entirely separate. The argument he makes about technology, that it should be measured by human impact rather than technical achievement, is the same argument that underwrites the philanthropic work. Health and water access are simply the version of that argument with the technology removed.
Related community initiatives are collected in the news and CSR section, including the campus talent work and the case for digital inclusion.
